Divine Friendships: Augustine’s Confessions

You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. --Confessions, Book I, Chapter 1

Join us Monday, June 14 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm for the first in our new monthly series, Divine Friendships, exploring Christian contemplative and devotional classics.

Our series starts with Augustine’s Confessions. Augustine, a fourth century bishop and theologian, greatly influenced the development of Western Christianity. His Confessions, in the form of a sustained conversation with God, tell of his restless search for happiness and truth. Augustine’s self-examination and divine grace cooperate to bring about his conversion and inflames his heart with the love of God.

Alan Dillingham will facilitate the first part of this session by selecting a few key passages from the Confessions for the group to review, with commentary and background information on Augustine and the text. The second part will be a period of reflective conversation by group participants.

For more on Augustine and his Confessions, check out Alan's blog post:Divine Friendships: Augustine's Confessions.
